User research

Before we began to even think about design, our team focused on user research. It is important to understand the scope of the project and the users' purpose in using the end product. To answer these questions, talking to people that might be interested in using the software, and even those who are not interested, can provide some solutions. We set out to talk to users at a movie theater about their movie going experience, their entertainment motivations, as well as their daily lives which would give insite into the need for on-the-go service.

User interviews

Our Story

The interviews took place at two theaters. One was a small theater in Squirrel Hill. This was close to town and very accessible to many people. The other theater was Loew’s Theater at the waterfront. This location was more remote to the city of Pittsburgh but had much more entertainment to offer. The users were approached inside the theater before they went to their movie. The random selection occurred, using anyone willing to talk before their experience.

On a Friday evening at the two above listed theaters, a total of 7 groups were interviewed. All of the people interviewed were in groups of two or three. This resulted in the interview of about 16-20 people in total.

Their Answers

Example interview:

Me and my friends just decided that a movie would be a fun thing to do tonight. We found the movie by searching on Fandego. I then proceeded to watch the Trailer online. We had a general idea of the movies when we came, however, it was the location that mattered to us. We knew we would go to Lowes. We decided on the time first and then looked to see if their was anything playing around then that we would enjoy.

We see movies about once every two weeks. We usually decide when we are at our jobs or in school. If I am not at a computer at the time, I will call up my friend who looks it up for me.

Cell phone Use:
I use cell phones every day, but mostly just to call. I will text once in a while, but rarely ever use the Internet. It seems like it would cost too much or be too confusing to do.

When we went to see this movie we just decided a few hours ago. We figured we could go get something to eat then finish the evening with Snakes On A Plane. We didn’t have much else to do. The only thing that really restricted us was the bus times. It only runs every so often so we had to plan around it. In fact Bill was going to meet up with us, but he couldn’t make the bus schedule.
